A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the spurious liquor poisoning incident in the district even as the death toll in the incident climbed to 15 with the death of one more person on Monday.

The district Deputy Commissioner has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. A total of 32 others have been admitted in hospital after drinking locally made illicit liquor.

Official sources said one of the seriously ill persons died at the Lakhimpur Civil Hospital, while six other critically ill persons were sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for advanced medical care.

The first death was reported late Saturday night and since then 14 people, including two women, died later.

Affected people, who are residents of Saboti and Kalyanpur area here, bought the hooch from a person at Kakoi Rajgarh area. The liquor seller has been absconding, police said.

The hooch was brewed illegally inside Dohing Tea Estate, about 11 km from here, but was sold in the town and most of the victims belonged to urban areas.

Search was on by police to nab the culprits, while the excise department has also launched raids to seize illegally brewed liquor.
