“Tendulkar is my sporting hero and because of the aura he carries, I still have difficulties speaking up to him outside a cricket field. But on the field, I always give my honest inputs about team strategy,” Dhoni said during the launch of a book titled Tendulkar: the Cricketer of the Century written by journalist Vimal Kumar.
Dhoni further revealed that he often disagreed with his idol over team strategy even before he became captain in 2007. In fact, Dhoni felt that his honest disagreements may have led to Tendulkar recommending his name for the captain’s post.
“Tendulkar and I used to discuss team strategy on the field and If I was convinced, I would even disagree with him and it happened quiet often. But I think my honesty paid dividends when he recommended me for captaincy.
He might have felt that I have learnt the different aspects of the game in quick time. Even if I were not made captain, it’s a huge thing for me to be recommended by Tendulkar for the job,” Dhoni said.
