Bachelor's widow usurps SoBo flat worth crores

Sister of late Rashmi Mayur, who was a key scientific advisor to Indira Gandhi, has been running to file an FIR against the 'impostor'

A 62-year-old woman, who claims to be the widow of Rashmi Mayur, a bachelor and key scientific advisor to former prime minister Indira Gandhi, has allegedly been forcibly occupying his apartment at the up-market Mahalaxmi area since his death in 2004.

Kumudini was shocked when she received a notice from the Mumbai Sessions Court within four months of Mayur's death, asking her to vacate the flat

Rashmi had helped Gandhi set up the Environment Ministry in 1969.

Kumudini Mayur (57), Rashmi's sister and a research scholar at John Hopkins Institute in the US, claims she has been unsuccessfully trying to file an FIR against Meena Mayur alias Amrut Vasan Mota for close to a year.

"Meena was our close family friend, but after Rashmi's death, she usurped his 3 BHK flat near Mahalaxmi mandir, which is worth crores," said Kumudini.

She said she was shocked when she got a notice from the Mumbai Sessions Court within four months of Mayur's death, asking her to vacate the flat.

"When I reached Mumbai in June, 2004, I came to know that Meena had not only occupied our flat, but also claimed that she was the widow of my brother, who never married," she added.

Kumudini found out that Meena had produced fake documents to establish herself as Dr Mayur's wife.
In a reply to her RTI application, the rationing office confirmed in writing (copy with MiD DAY) that the ration card produced by Meena was tampered with and there was no record proving that she was Mayur's wife.

On December 9, 2004, the US Consulate in India, on the basis of Rashmi's passport and visa details also confirmed (copy with MiD DAY) that Mayur never travelled abroad with his spouse despite staying in India
for only 66 days between 2001 andu00a0 2003.

Meena claimed that she married Mayur twice in the Mahalaxmi temple in 1981 and 1986. Shree Mahalaxmi Temple Charities, however, gave it in writing that no marriages are performed in the temple sanctum.

"The rationing officer knows Meena has fabricated the documents and yet no case has been registered against her.

She has made a voter's ID card and two PAN cards using the fake ration card. Now, I am planning to meet Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh," said Kumudini.

The Other Side
"I have produced all the documents before the court, which will reveal what the truth is. I cannot comment on the issue and Kumudini should also not approach the media," said Meena. "The matter is under investigation," said Inspector Sudhir Mali of the Gamdevi police station.
