Freeskool, a new initiative started by The Hive, a multi-arts space, will offer talks, film screenings and workshops on a variety of subjects

Back to school

This school does not offer your typical textbook subjects and will make you ponder on a lot of questions that emerge from our current cultural scenario. How cool is this school?

The Hive, a space that serves as a venue for a variety of performances and seminars has started an initiative called Freeskool, with which they plan to hold film screenings, workshops and talks that will be free for all to attend. The Freeskool sessions will cover a variety of topics with the help of experts from different fields who will head the talks and workshops. Through this, they aim to create cultural interest among people.

“Through Freeskool, we want to create a space where one can learn, and volunteer to educate people about different topics. We plan to have 20 film screenings in a month, starting with Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme which is for people with an interest in Hip Hop. Another documentary that will be screened is The Day My God Died, which is about child sex slavery in the country,” informs Sudeip Nair from The Hive.

Freestyle The Art of Rhyme is an award-winning documentary that features some of the best MCs and Hip Hop artistes of all time (think Mos Def, Eminem, The Notorious B.I.G.). This 2000 documentary has won several international awards and has been directed by Kevin Fitzgerald and DJ Organic.
