Over the past two weeks, several blunders in paper corrections and delay in results by more than a month, especially in engineering colleges, have come to the notice of the varsity and discussions are on to come up with ways to rectify the situation.

Sources told MiD DAY that plans are afoot to give engineering colleges a free rein to evaluate answer papers of students belonging to the first to the fourth semesters.

Currently, the pattern of evaluation is such that exams are conducted at the college level after which the papers are sent to a centre selected by the UoP. This centre is known as the continuous assessment of papers (CAP) centre, where professors from various colleges are called on a particular day to evaluate all the answer sheets.

However, experts say that this puts a lot of pressure on the evaluators, leading to delays and mistakes too. The UoP is now planning to nominate many more centres for evaluation of papers and the selection will be done area wise.

Jayant Bapat, head of telecommunication department at Maharashtra Academy of Engineering (MAE), said the idea seemed promising enough. "It will be a good idea; even the Mumbai University has done a similar thing few months ago. This will help in reducing the pressure of evaluation on CAP centre and delay in results can also get rectified," he said.

According to sources, UoP is planning to select area wise centres for evaluations and depending on the number of students who have appeared for the examinations in the vicinity and examiners available, papers would be sent there. The entire process would be controlled and overseen by a university official in each area.

Shivaji Ahire, controller of examinations at the UoP, said that he had heard of such reports doing the rounds. "These decisions are not taken at my level, but other top officials in the varsity. We are merely the implementing authority and though I have heard about such plans, I can comment only after an order is issued," he said. Despite repeated attempts, R K Shevgaonkar, vice-chancellor of the UoP, was not available for comment.
