Bandra acid attack victim succumbs to infection

Even while the alleged accused of the Bandra acid attack case continues to remain unknown, the victim Preeti Rathi, the aspiring nurse from Delhi, succumbed to her injuries yesterday. After battling for her life for a month, the 23-year-old succumbed to septicemia and multi-organ failure at 4 pm at Marine Line’s Bombay Hospital yesterday.u00a0

Rathi’s condition had been critical from the time she was admitted in the ICU of Byculla’s Masina Hospital after the incident on May 3. However, her kidneys stopped functioning completely yesterday morning. “Her blood levels had dropped to an extremely low level after which she was put on heavy medication. The infection in her lungs eventually lead to a septic shock,” said Dr Sagar Sakle, spokesperson, Bombay Hospital.

Rathi was shifted to Bombay Hospital on May 19 after which she underwent a series of tests, which determined the damage to her wind and food pipes. Doctors temporarily closed the hole between her food and windpipe and a hole was made in her stomach to feed her (jejunoscopy).

However, despite the doctors’ efforts, Preeti’s condition steadily started deteriorating after suffering from a lung collapse. Her body was shifted to state-run JJ Hospital for post mortem yesterday.

Speaking to SUNDAY MiD DAY, the victim’s uncle, Vinod Dahiya said, “Though I’m not in the city Preeti’s father called us as soon as he received the bad news. Her parents are in a state of shock. They are yet to come to terms with the loss of their daughter.”

Dahiya added that the family wants justice. “The man who flung acid at her in broad daylight should be caught and punished. We have demanded that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) take over the case,” said Dahiya.

The CCTV footage shows the accused running on platform 2 of Bandra station after throwing the acid on May 2. With a bottle in his left hand, he removes the handkerchief and cleans his face. “The footage quality is very bad and it’s very difficult to get the clear picture of the culprit. He is in camera only for around 10 seconds,” a senior GRP official said. Preeti’s body will be taken to her native place in Haryana for the last rites. u00a0
