After facing stern action from civic officials, owners seek stay against show-cause notices sent by the BMC

Just two days after the civic body initiated strict action against illegal structures at plush restaurants and bars in Bandra, the owners have approached the court to seek a stay against the show-cause notices sent by the BMC.

BMC planned on taking action against 20-odd eateries in Bandra, which are violating BMC rules. ('Zenzi's licence on hold, others in soup', January 11.)

On Tuesday, the civic officials demolished the illegal construction at Zenzi Lounge at Waterfield Road. Also, the BMC officials have seized equipment including gas cylinders and utensils from various other eateries.

Confirming the action, Mahendra Sawant, building and factory department, said, "We had issued notices to 10 eateries located at Carter Road last week for the illegal construction and use of open spaces around their eateries. However, we can't talk much on this matter as it is sub judice."

Shashi Puri, owner of Kareem's on Carter Road, who too, received a show-cause notice from the BMC, said, "After we received the BMC notices we decided to approach the court and we have also been able to get a stay on the notices."

Puri, who also represents Carter Road Restaurant and Eateries Association, added, "We do not serve liquor and do not allow our patrons to create any nuisance, which may cause inconvenience to the residents.

We are not against the ALM (Advance locality management) groups. In case, they have grievances, we can sit together and sort them out."

AMC's visit
After the continuous reports in MiD DAY regarding the BMC's action against Zenzi, sources said that the Additional Municipal Commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar is scheduled to visit the eatery and inspect it thoroughly. Despite calls and messages, Mahiskar was unavailable for comment.
