Percussionist and composer Lukas Ligeti is all set to charm Puneites with his performance on the Marimba Lumina. In a freewheeling chat, he talks about his love for the lesser-known sounds from across the globe and his curiosity about Indian Classical styles
"It is not only my first performance in Pune, but it is my first concert in India," says composer-percussionist Lukas Ligeti, who is excited to perform for an Indian audience. Ligeti will play the Marimba Lumina, an electronic MIDI controller today at the Mazda Hall. The instrument was designed by the legendary American engineer Don Buchla who assisted Bob Moog, a pioneer of electronic music of the 1960s.
The Austrian percussionist experiments with world music as he incorporates elements from Jazz, Electronic and African beats into his personal style of experimentalism. "Indian music is one of the richest and most multilayered music traditions in the world," says Ligeti, as he speaks of his interest in learning the genre. "I do not know enough about Indian music but I hope to gain insights into the music during my tour," he adds. Ligeti works with his music at a conceptual level.
"It is important for me to understand the inner workings of music to pick up an influence," describes Ligeti as he admits that the elements of Indian music like the raga and taal have inspired him.u00a0"I am sure that after this tour, once I have digested what I have heard, a more perceptible influence will start seeping into my music," he adds.
Even though he is inspired and influenced by various musical styles from across the world, Ligeti's favourite style remains traditional court music of the Buganda kingdom.u00a0"The music that I heard when I travelled to Buganda cannot be explained in words. I mention it because it includes lesser known polymetric and psycho-acoustic concepts and ideas which have helped me develop my own voice as a composer," says Lukas.
