After months of speculation, it was actor Saif Ali Khan who finally announced to the world that he was to have a child with his actress wife, Kareena Kapoor. A statement released by the couple on Saturday said they are expecting a baby in December 2016. “My wife and I would like to announce that we are expecting our first child in December. We would like to thank our well wishers for their blessings and support and also the press for their discretion and patience,” it said. This will be Saif’s third child. He has a son and daughter with first wife, Amrita Singh.

Let’s rewind a year of pesky rumours. It was last December that Kareena’s elder sister Karisma Kapoor defended her sister against rumours surrounding her alleged pregnancy. She went on record to say that Kareena planned to have a baby when she was ready since she was busy with her films. But the wagging tongues wouldn’t stop, nudged by Kareena’s fluctuating weight giving rise to is she, isn’t she?” debates in press and social media. In retrospect, it now may well be that she denied being pregnant in the same month that she got so. In April, Kareena had said in an interview, “I am not pregnant. I am not planning to have a baby for the next two years. What rubbish people talk! When I decide to have a child, I will have it the natural way. I don’t believe in freezing my eggs.” This was after she was spotted in the gynaecology ward of a suburban hospital.

But by June, she had decided to go back on her “two year” plan, and said she wasn’t interested in doing Hollywood films since she was keen to start a family. It was also the time she was promoting her just-released film, Udta Punjab. Every sartorial choice was made keeping the growing bump in mind — loose ethnic kurtas, strategically placed shawls and satchels that would sit at her belly came in handy.

In June, her father Randhir Kapoor, (who was or not in the know?) said, “Well, they haven’t told me yet, so I have no clue, but I hope it’s true. It’s high time that they had a baby.”

All he had to do was ask.

And though the Kapoor and Khans may be rejoicing, it could keep one of Hindi cinema’s most popular actresses away from the screen for some time. It would seem that she backed out of Golmaal 4 because of the pregnancy. Though the producers of her next film, Veere Di Wedding, slated to start shooting in August told mid-day that Kareena continues to be part of the project. Rhea Kapoor, producer of the film said, “Ekta Kapoor and I, with our families and companies, are delighted and excited for Kareena and Saif. As producers of Veere Di Wedding, we are thrilled to be part of their special journey. Bebo is a thorough professional and will start shooting in August. Much like the spirit of our film, which celebrates the modern girl, Kareena is going on with her work and life as usual and we couldn’t be prouder to have her [on board].”
