Bedecked cupcakes, anyone?

City's latest dessert service, Tart.co.in seeks the sweet tooth market that loves their cupcakes, biscuits and cakes embellished with fancy detailings. WHAT's ON says the pastry chefs should've invested equal zeal in the taste too

If you were set up on a blind date with a cupcake from Tart.co.in, it would pass the good looks round rather easily.

But, does it taste all that good is what you'd wonder next. The pastry chefs at Tart know how to make your piece of dessert look tempting to set your mouth into a whirlpool of drool.

And, the delivery is much more of a surprise since the service's all-text website is devoid of any "gastro porn" images or teaser previews.

Tart.co.in is a by-order dessert service started by Aashiyana Shroff, owner of VongWong and Dragonfly restaurants located at Nariman Point.

Therefore, chances are you may have tried a few desserts on the menu of Tart, if you are a regular at these joints. Tart specialises in fancy cupcakes, cheesecakes, biscuits, wedding cakes, cookies, pastries like Cream Eclairs, Croissants and Tarts.

What else? Tart also provides catering services for events and kids' parties complete with a 5-course meal, customised desserts and hand-decorated biscuits for corporate occasions, festivals and weddings.

How to order? After browsing through the menu online, you can place your order by calling the number mentioned on top of the site, next to a rather quirky (or "tarty-looking") character with too much rouge on her cheeks and an upside down cupcake for a bouffant.

You can also mail queries and orders to aashiyana@tart.co.in, which, after much scouring, we found it listed under FAQs instead of the "How to Order" category, strangely.

Did our cupcakes make good dates? Our batch of Chocolate with Double Chocolate Frosting and Chocolate with Oreo Frosting looked perfectly decadent. With expectations pinning the sky, we bit into one.

The cupcakes tasted just average, not bad but mediocre, in comparison to the sinful indulgence they appeared to be.

While the cake itself was crumbly and soft at once, the icing tasted synthetic, grainy and lacked the thick, homemade touch like cupcakes sold the world over have.

The Oreo Frosting was a tad better than the chocolate one. And we can safely say we've had better.

Start-up hazards: Most deliveries require 24 to 48 hours notice, and we found it silly to "plan" a craving for a cupcake in advance.

Despite waiting for a full day for our order, our delivery got further delayed by a couple of hours. Luckily, it wasn't an occasion-based order so we didn't pick a bone and let it go as a start-up glitch.

Price range: Cupcakes: Rs 50 to Rs 60 per cup cake. Minimum order of 12, and 6 per flavour. Cakes: Rs 550 per kg (regular), and Rs 900 for half a kg decorative cake.

Most orders need to be placed 48 hours in advance. Customised and wedding orders must be placed 15 to 20 days prior. Free home delivery from Nariman Point up to Worli
