Ravindra Kantrole, who had terrorised Mumbai with his peculiar style of killing, gets lifer

Ravindra Kantrole alias 'Beer Man', who created terror and left a bloody trail in Mumbai, was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Mumbai sessions court, on Thursday.u00a0u00a0

The court convicted Kantrole for two murders, based on the eyewitness account and evidence collected through narco analysis test, which was conducted on him two years ago.

Kantrole, who was staying in Dargah, used to identify rag pickers and the homeless sleeping on the pavements on Marine Drive and kill them using broken beer bottles. He would later dump the bodies on the rock bed of the seashore, the police said.

His arrest

Kantrole murdered a rag picker by stabbing him in 2005. A woman who was going on a morning walk noticed a body next to Ravindra Kantrole lying next to it. When she raised an alarm, Kantrole fled from the scene.

The police rushed to the spot and found a chit and a broken beer bottle next to the body. The dog squad was pressed into service, which led the police to a nearby shelter for the homeless.

Kantrole escaped from the scene and went to the shelter for the homeless to wash his blood-stained clothes.

The sniffer dog led the police to the bathroom where Kantrole had washed his clothes. Police then tracked Kantrole and booked him on charges of murder.

35 murder cases

Further investigations helped them to reopen around 35 murder cases of unidentified persons. Based on the court's directions, Kantrole was brought to Bangalore for a narcoanalysis test in March 2006.

Police said that Kantrole had a disturbed childhood, as his aunt, after the death of his mother, became his caretaker and used to harass him.

Black magic

Kantrole was convinced his aunt had killed his mother through black magic. He ran away from home and started living in Dargah to save himself from 'black magic'.u00a0

While living in Dargah, he came across vagabonds, rag pickers and homeless indulging in drug abuse and homosexuality. Kantrole decided to kill such people thinking they were bad elements.
