Survey finds most Indian girls want to know their partner better before marriage

Arranged marriages are back in vogue but with a fair twist. The modern Indian girl doesn't mind marrying the guy mom has chosen for her, but she wants to check him out before saying I do.

A nationwide survey has found out that youngsters in Indian metros are in no mood to marry an unknown partner, and that women are becoming more independent and are participating in their marriage decision. The survey says 87.74 per cent of women think it is necessary to know one's life partner before marriage.

The survey, conducted by the matrimony portal www.shaadi.com, reveals that in Delhi, 78.77 per cent men and 89.01 per cent women feel it's important to know their partner better before settling down. In Mumbai, 79.57 per cent men and 89.69 per cent women feel the same. In Bangalore too women win as 95.31 of them want to know their would-be better against only 81.52 men.

Interestingly, there is one point where the two meet: both men and women want to be alone with their would-be instead of watching a movie, pursuing a hobby or spending time with family.

Gourav Rakshit, business head of shaadi.com, said, "Around 12,000 people participated in this survey which was conducted over two weeks and the result has changed since the last survey. Females are becoming ndependent and are participating in the marriage decision. The survey also shows a large number of young men do not mind marrying girls who are physically disabled or from different castes. Even the traditional preference for darker-skinned girls is reducing."

Unknotting the knot
Caste no bar: 51.53% male and 47.62% female respondents agreed caste didn't matter in marriage. Parents, however, still beg to differ on that thought. 37.56% parents of would-be grooms and 47.27% parents of would-be brides are still particular about marrying their wards within their own caste only. State wise, Delhi is the most liberal with most respondents saying that caste did not matter to them.
Kundli conditions: Most respondents felt finding the perfect match is more about compatibility than matching horoscopes. While 60.37% respondents voted against compatibility of horoscopes, 23.82% said they
would go ahead and match horoscopes.
Friendly before marriage: 87.74% women and 72.67% men think it is necessary to know one's life partner before marriage.
