Deena Bennett, a resident of Kalyan Nagar who noticed the advertisement, approached Ajay who claimed to be the owner of Radheshyam Associates.

After enquiring about Bennett's background, Ajay asked her to submit copies of her educational certificates and passport for verification.

The fraud is a local version of Nigerian online lottery fraud where cheats hook gullible clients on the Internet.

After mailing the copies, Bennett called him on his cell phone to confirm, for which Ajay told her to deposit a processing fee of Rs 6,000 to release the loan amount.

Ajay received the amount in person at a public place in Rajajinagar.

The next day, he called her up to deposit another installment of Rs 4,500 stating that the loan amount depending upon her performance in the high school would be sent to her postal address.

Overwhelmed by the response, Bennett deposited the amount to his account but soon realised that something was wrong. When she did not get any reply, she tried to contact Ajay, but his phone was switched off.

The Pulakeshi Nagar police said that they have sought his details from the bank to track him.

According to the police, this fraud is a local version of Nigerian online lottery fraud where they hook gullible clients on the Internet. However, Ajay used local newspapers to lure victims and targetted students, said cops.

"We suspect that Ajay has conned many others using the similar modus operandi.

But we have got only one complaint so far and the victims who might be belonging to different areas might have complaints in their jurisdictional police stations," said Pulakeshi Nagar Inspector B Girish.
