Some of them are dismantled and sold at junkyards as spare parts, while others are sold to new owners with new papers, and are plying on city roads with fake registration numbers.
The city traffic police have come across 20 such instances, all thanks to the surveillance cameras that are installed across various traffic junctions.

On camera
Everyday, more than 1,000 cases are registered at the Traffic Management Centre with the surveillance cameras.
A camera takes pictures and sends them to a computer that generates notices, which are then sent to the
traffic violators.
"In a few instances when the notices reached the vehicle owners, they claimed that they had not done any violations.
When they demanded for video proof, they were shocked to see that it was not their vehicle but it carried the same registration number," said Traffic Sub-Inspector R Sudhir.
"In one of the several instances, a notice was generated against a vehicle for crossing a stop line which was sent to the owner, Shanthilal Kothari.
When Kothari came to check the video proof he was surprised to see a Honda Activa in place of his Hero Honda Pleasure, with the same registration number.
ACP of the Traffic Training Institute SA Pasha, said, "We will alert the police stations of the area concerned to trace the vehicle and photographs will be circulated.
If the vehicle is traced, suitable action will be taken against such vehicles."
