Evan as the Maharashtra Government revealed that it had written to the central government to give the Bharat Ratna to Sachin Tendulkar, the calls for the cricket icon being given the country's top civilian award is growing.

Describing Tendulkar as the "son of the soil", Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Thursday told the state assembly that after India's World Cup victory last year, the state cabinet had met and decided that it would recommend Tendulkar's name for the Bharat Ratna.

India's latest batting sensation Virat Kohli joined the legions of cricket fans calling for Tendulkar to get the Bharat Ratna.

"He (Tendulkar) really deserves Bharat Ratna. Whatever he has done, I don't think anyone else can be even be close to achieve (100 hundreds in international cricket) what he achieved in last 22 years .. it is something impossible," Kohli told reporters.u00a0

The clamour for honouring the Little Master with Bharat Ratna intensified after Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan told the state Assembly that his government would recommend Tendulkar's name for the highest civilian award.u00a0

The demands for the award have found a vocal support across all sections of the society, both national and international. The social media sites are full of fans clamouring for the government to bestow the honour on the little master.

Sachin’s name for the Bharat Ratna started doing the rounds around the time of last year’s World Cup, but it really picked up after he reached the landmark of 100th international tons on March 16.

Even West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee while congratulating Tendulkar on the occasion of his 100th ton had recommended the centre confer the honour on him.u00a0
