Man cancels order, takes Rs 1,500 back by cheque, fudges numbers to make it Rs 5.75 lakh
A conman who identified himself as Venkateshwara Naidu conned Prakash Motors, a Hero Honda dealer, at Siddayya Circle in Lalbagh of Rs 5.75 lakh.
Naidu, the only name by which the police know the man so far, had paid an advance of Rs 1,500 in cash on July 22 to book a new Hero Honda Splendor motorcycle. Two days later, he cancelled the booking. The dealer promptly settled his dues by issuing a cheque for Rs 1,500.
Six months later, officials at the showroom realised that the man had changed the numbers written on the cheque and used the cheque to withdraw a whopping Rs 5.75 lakh from their account.
N Narendra, manager of Prakash Motors, filed a complaint with the Sampangiram Nagar police station after the fraud came to light on Monday, when the firm's accounts were audited.
Narendra said, "The conman added the numeral '5' before '1' and altered the '1' to '7' and inserted an extra '0' to turn the cheque of Rs 15,000 to one of Rs 5,75,000.u00a0 The conman encashed the cheque at a Hyderabad branch of the Union Bank of India in July this year."
The SR Nagar police are seeking Naidu's details from the bank in Hyderabad.
"We wanted to find out whether the conman is a professional who has cheated many people in a similar fashion or he just tried his luck for the first time," a senior office from the police said.
