Mitesh Jethva (24) becomes the city's first accident victim

This year's first fatal accident took place on the Eastern Express Highway opposite Somaiya Medical College, Chunabhatti. Mitesh Jethva (24), a ship survey course student, died, while his friend Kinjal Patel (19) suffered grievous injuries.

A Nehru Nagar police officer said, "They were on their way from Ghatkopar when, while overtaking a car, their bike hit a tempo, which had broken down in the middle of the road.

Jethva did not see the tempo, as its indicator lights were off. After the accident, the tempo driver did not inform us nor did he try to help the injured."

Jethva was declared dead on admission at Sion Hospital, while Patel is in the trauma ward. Jethva was engaged to be married soon and is survived by three brothers.

The police have arrested the tempo driver, Sunil Wagh, and released him on a bail of Rs 3,000.
