The audience was all ears. The BJP's national president Nitin Gadkari was delivering his valedictory speech.

Gadkari, however, thundered on. "We need to cater to SCs and STs and the minorities..." The two-day state BJP convention drew to a close in Jalgaon on Sunday evening.

Gadkari stressed the need for education and administrative skills among party members.

Then, it was Malini's turn to say a few words.

She kept it short. She fumbled and stuttered. There were hissing whispers from other senior leaders who shared the dais with the who's who of the party's executive.

And then a faux pas.

While addressing senior party leaders, she did not mention the name of newly appointed state president Sudhir Mungantiwar. Quick to her rescue was a senior leader from New Delhi who prompted the new name.

The goof-ups were quickly forgotten by party workers who were part of the audience. As the dream girl gave away roses to party workers who had toiled hard to make the convention a success, several of the grassroots workers made a beeline to accept the flowers.

Verse for dreamgirl

One party worker had even penned a poem for Malini who seemed only too glad to accept it. She was quickly seen reading it.

A little fracas broke out in the hall. A few party workers were livid as their view was blocked by camerapersons shooting Malini as she was being honoured.

One of the workers even got into a heated argument with the shutterbugs.

Lessons from others
Taking a cue from the Manmohan Singh government, Mungantiwar wants to present an audit report of himself to the national president and expects his deputies to follow suit.

Even new national executive committee member, Shaina u00a0N C, wants to go the MNS and Shiv Sena way. She suggested that the party organise youth career melas like the other two parties. "We need to set up an interactive website and hold career fairs so that youth can come to the party," Shaina said.
