One woman was killed and up to five people wounded today in an explosion at a railway station in Russia's troubled North Caucasus region of Dagestan.

The explosive device went off at the station in the southern Dagestan city of Derbent on the Caspian Sea as a surburban train approached, the ITAR-TASS and Interfax news agencies reported, quoting security sources.

Interfax quoted a source as saying "operations are underway to find the bandits who planted the homemade explosive material."

Three police were among the wounded, Interfax said. As with other regions of the North Caucasus, the local pro-Kremlin authorities in Dagestan are battling to defeat an Islamist insurgency that has already left scores of civilians and police dead.

In March, 12 people were killed in a double suicide attack in Dagestan which came after coordinated suicide bombings on the Moscow metro blamed on Islamists from the Caucasus claimed the lives of 39 people.
