Amid the hullabaloo kicked up by the governor's threat to sanction for prosecuting the chief minister and home minister R Ashok based on corruption charges made by two lawyers, Yeddyurappa's detractors in the party seem to have forgotten their differences, and saving the government has become their top priority for now.
"The high command had sent a clear signal that the chief minister must not resign at any circumstance and every one in the party must rally behind him," said a senior BJP leader. "Accordingly, the party leaders are backing him."
The stand off between the governor and the CM reached a crescendo yesterday, with Bharadwaj taking the government to task for not furnishing the documents he sought on the land scams that the lawyers had mentioned in the complaint and taking objection for the BJP's move to press the president for recalling him.
'Calling him a thief'
"It is like 'ulta chor kotwal ko daante'," commented Bharadwaj. "January 20 was the last date for them to submit the documents but they didn't. On top of it they are blaming me," he added.
This statement needled BJP leader including his cabinet colleagues, including S Suresh Kumar, Govind Karjola, R Ashok, V Sommanna, and Basavaraja Bommai called a joint press conference to express their solidarity to the CM, while hitting back at the governor. "It is unbecoming of the governor calling the CM a thief," said Kumar. "We are not hereu00a0 to take crap."
He said the government has furnished all the documents except a few, and the Congress was trying to prosecute the CM to pull down the elected government. With the issue still hot, the BJP is seeing a political opportunity to consolidate its support base among its voters.
"We can see that out supporters feel the Congress is harassing Yeddyurappa through Raj Bhavan. This should help us in the elections," said Kumar.
War of words
And its not just the BJP making politics out of governor's overturesu00a0-- the Congress is not far behind. While the BJP wants to play the sympathy card, the Congress is making corruption a poll issue .
"If the governor gives the sanction and Yeddyurappa is prosecuted, the issue will lose steam, and the BJP will benefit from it. So, it is better the governor talks about it rather than ending the drama with the sanction," said a Congress leader. Though, he hinted that the governor may not give the sanction, and the war of words would continue.u00a0
