Bling it all, Bappida!

Bappida was sporting bling, even before it came into fashion. This composer and singer is certainly worth his weight in gold, literally. Even though he's been ripped for his outrageous bold, gold statement, he's always been sporting about it. He jokes, "The value of gold keeps fluctuating, so I don't know how much I am worth today."

WHO: Bappi Lahiri
WHAT: Talking about his love for gold
WHERE: At his Juhu residence

The disco king of Bollywood, who is as famous for his trademark style as he is for his unforgettable retro numbers, is all set to show off his acting chops with films like It's Rocking Dard-E-Disco and Bappida Tussi Great Ho. Here are excerpts from an interview with CS:

Striking gold
Gold is lucky for me. The first necklace was gifted to me by my mom, as a lucky charm. It had a locket with Hare Krishna Hare Rama written on it, and it was meant to protect me. That's when I realised that gold brought me good fortunes and I started sporting gold jewellery. I wear a gold chain with a Ganpati locket as I am a big devotee of Ganesha. My wife, Chitrani has gifted me a chain with a big 'B' locket. This was after I developed a big fan following. These are the three main necklaces around my neck, along with some others. As I am a multi-religious person, you will also find different kadas and a bracelet from the Vatican on me.

I am a golden man
Throughout the world, I am known as Bling bling Bappi. I am recognised by my jewellery. Some years back, I was at London for a show. I had zipped up my jacket as it was quite cold. A Pakistani fan came up to me and said, "You look like Bappi Lahiri." I told him, "I am Bappi," to which he retorted, "No, you can't be him. Where is your gold?" That's when I unzipped my jacket. On another occasion, one of my look-alikes came sporting tons of fake jewellery. I told him that to be Bappi Lahiri you have to wear real gold, and work hard for it.

Style bhai
As a youngster, I was a big fan of Elvis Presley and his style statement. I loved the diamond cross he wore on his neck and his glares. So, when I became a singer I started wearing dark glasses and that's continued till today. I love the colour blue, and you'll mostly see me in deep ink blue or brown outfits. Many people mistake the blue for black but I never wear black as it's unlucky for me. My style statement has become my identity. My hairstyle has been the same for the past five decades!
