Not long after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) gave a clean chit to Harmeet Singh in the spot fixing scandal yesterday, the 21-year-old left-arm spinner received a very special call.

It was Bishan Singh Bedi, phoning in to say how happy he was with the news and with a warning. “I told Harmeet that he should know now who’s helping him and who’s not,” Bedi told MiD DAY yesterday.

A few days ago in Mumbai, the Sardar of Spin had a fruitful bowling session with Harmeet, who still does not know which team will rope him in to play first-class cricket this season.

Bedi agreed that the road ahead for India’s 2012 under-19 World Cup star is full of “work, work and more work.”u00a0The former India captain said: “I would like to think that Harmeet now has a clean page before him to work on.

This is a bloody good eye-opener for him. No one can mollycoddle him now. He is a grown up adult and will have to work his way up.”u00a0Bedi has been a sharp critic of the BCCI and their functioning.

Yesterday, he had a word of praise for the establishment: “At least the Board has shown some guts and gumption (in handing out life bans to S Sreesanth and Ankeet Chavan). However, punishment should apply not only to the players, but officials as well… not just the players.”u00a0
