'Blue is the Warmest Colour' wins Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival

The festival’s top award, the prestigious Palme d’Or, went to Abdellatif Kechiche’s 'Blue is the Warmest Color'.


The award was voted on by the jury that included Steven Spielberg, Ang Lee, Nicole Kidman, Christian Mungiu, Lynne Ramsey, Christoph Waltz, Vidya Balan, Daniel Auteuil and Naomi Kawase.

It drew attention because of its graphic and extended sex scenes between its unknown lead actress, Adele Exarchopoulos, and Lea Seydoux.

It is both the most sexually explicit Palme winner and the first gay-themed love story to win.

The second prize known as the Grand Prix of the Jury went to Inside Llewyn Davis by Joel and Ethan Coen. Meanwhile, the best director award went to Spanish helmer Amat Escalante for his fourth feature Heli.

Other big winners included Berenice Bejo for The Past. The actress won the coveted Best Actress Award while American born Bruce Dern surprised audiences and critics winning the Best Actor award for his turn in Alexander Payne’s Nebraska.

The jury prize [Prix du Jury] went to Like Father, Like Son by Kore-eda Hirokazu, which many pundits believed was one of the strongest contenders in the competition slate.

The award for Best First Feature [Camera d’Or] went to Ilo Ilo directed by Anthony Chen while the Best Screenplay award [Prix du Scenario] went to Jia Zhangke for A Touch Of Sin.

Previous winners of the Palme d’Or are The Tree of Life Amour, Uncle Boome Who Can Recall his Past Lives, The Class and The White Ribbon.

The Cannes Film Festival is known as one of the most prestigious and biggest festivals in the film industry where over 4,000 films are screened in the market and in the official slate.
The festival opened on May 15 with Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby and closed on May 26 with Jerome Salles’ Orlando Bloom-Forest Whitaker starrer Zulu. u00a0
