Acting on MiDDAY's findings of the campaign on the worst roads in the city, the BMC's standing committee chairperson Rahul Shewale made a visit to Chembur, an area that is home to some of Mumbai's worst roads, as detailed in a story on April 18, 2011 ('12 roads that make up one hell of a ride').

Shewale visited the area along with BMC and MMRDA officials to take stock of the situation so that repair work could begin as soon as possible. "The condition was pathetic. I had informed the road department about it previously too. But it is the MMRDA's job to get the work done and I have told them to complete it before May 31," he said.

The BMC has chalked out 2,195 pothole locations in the city that have to be attended to before the rains kick in. A BMC official said, on condition of anonymity, "The ongoing Monorail work is adding to the deterioration of roads. We have asked the MMRDA to repair these roads time and again, but nothing has been done."u00a0Shewale further added, "There are innumerable potholes in the RC Marg locality, not to mention six water leakages. One, which was on the BMC line, has been repaired, while the rest on the MMRDA line, have not."

He also claimed that the BMC took action to divert the heavy vehicle inflow on this road towards Mahul Marg due to the ongoing work. At last count, there were 2,195 spots with potholes, 459 in the island city, 382 in the eastern suburbs and 1,354 in the western suburbs. Dahisar has the highest number of pothole locations (344), Malad has the second highest at 291, and Bandra (W) comes third at 180. A Ward that stretches from Nariman Point to Metro cinema, has only 11 pothole locations; the lowest in South Mumbai.
