In its draft Development Control Regulations, which are currently being revised, the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has reserved land to construct old-age homes and daycare centers every 1000 sq mts.
The provision means Mumbai will get 24 such centres, one in each ward.
The BMC is in process of creating it's DCR and development plan for the period 2014-2034. The two are very important documents as they will dictate real estate development in the city. As part of it, the civic body has made a separate provision for the elderly for the first time.
According to a statement released by the civic body, it will now be possible to have a home for the elderly and a daycare centre for children at the same place. The provision will help homeless as well as those who do not have someone to care for during the day viz elderly and kids. Besides, healthcare and recreational activities will also be included. the BMC will try to have these centres near gardens.
