BMC to spend Rs 10 crore on fire brigade's wireless system

The BMC plans to spend Rs 10 crore of the Rs 102 crore earmarked for modernising the fire brigade on upgrading the firemen's wireless radio system.

"The existing wireless radio communication system has undergone repeated repairs. We are in talks with Motorola and Nokia. Our focus is on improving voice clarity because firemen complain that they often have a problem making sense of what is being said at the other end of the line. There also have been instances when the system has failed," said S S Shinde, joint municipal commissioner, disaster management.

What the fire brigade will get
- Five bulletproof jackets
- Protection equipment
- Thermal imaging cameras
- Power-operated chain saws
- Three-layer fire proximity suits
- New hose pipes
- Small fire tender
- Recovery van
- Air compressor
- Headgears that will allow firemen maintain contact with other personnel during operations
- 17 new fire engines

The decision to buy equipment mentioned above was made in a meeting of the Fire and Emergency Services Committee of the BMC last month that followed the 26/11 terror attacks
