IF the municipal commissioner has his way, then soon the city will have a road meandering through its coastline, right from its southern-most tip to the far suburbs.

More importantly, the road will connect high security zones near Raj Bhavan, Navy Nagar to major coastal roads like Carter Road, Bandstand and Marine Drive.

The new road will improve connectivity and ease traffic in the suburbs, which has fewer freeways and arterial roads than the island city, said a Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official.

The new amendment to the Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) norms announced on January 7, 2011 makes special provisions for coastal roads and other amenities in Mumbai. It allows construction of coastal roads by land reclamation or use of stilts.

Two weeks ago, Kumar called a meeting of the leaders from various political parties in the civic body, who gave the project the go-ahead.

"We had a meeting, where Kumar mooted the idea of a coastal road.

It will improve connectivity of the roads in the city. The project may cost anywhere between Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000 crore and will definitely be carried out by the BMC," said Rahul Shewale, standing committee chairperson, BMC.

A BMC official said even in the high-security zones such as those near Raj Bhavan, Navy Nagar, among others, the land would be reclaimed to lay the roads. The road would have adequate security.

Besides, provisions would also be made to reclaim land near mangroves with minimum destruction.

Shewale said that major roads like Carter Road, Bandstand, and Marine Drive Road have already been constructed well.

"So the need right now is to connect these roads and the new CRZ norm gives us the permission to do so.

For a road connecting Navy Nagar to the highly guarded naval dock and Mumbai Port Trust area, an alternative would be thought about in sometime as we are still working on it.

We would be reclaiming the land and taking certain security measures near Raj Bhavan area, Navy Nagar area, among others," Shewale said.

"We will try to minimise the hurdles that would come in while implementing the project as it will be one of the biggest in the city."
