American music legend Bob Dylan winning the Nobel Literature Prize left several people of Twitterverse stunned and wondering how authors such as Haruki Murakami, Ngugi Wa Thiong’o and Philip Roth were overlooked and also how a song lyricist was picked for literary prize
US legendary songwriter Bob Dylan has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature this year. Well, Twitterati are wondering if 'the Booker Prize will go to Baba Sehgal next'?
American music legend Bob Dylan on Thursday won the Nobel Literature Prize, the first songwriter to win the prestigious award and an announcement that stunned prize watchers.
Dylan, 75, was honoured "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition," the Swedish Academy said.
The choice was met by gasps and a long round of applause from journalists attending the prize announcement.
The folk singer has been mentioned in Nobel speculation in past years, but was never seen as a serious contender.
The Academy's permanent secretary Sara Danius said Dylan's songs were "poetry for the ears."
Well, the announcement wasn't 'poetry' to everyone's ears. Some Twitterati were shocked by the news. People were surprised that authors such as Haruki Murakami, Ngugi Wa Thiong’o and Philip Roth were overlooked. They were also wondering how a song lyricist was picked for Nobel Prize in Literature.
HERE'S WHAT THE TWITTERATI HAD TO SAY:
Good for Dylan. But there’s something sad about literature’s place in modern culture that the committee looks to a rock star for relevance.— Yoni Appelbaum (@YAppelbaum) October 13, 2016
I don't mind Bob Dylan's music. Seriously. But not in a million years did he deserve the Nobel Prize in Literature.— Patrick French (@PatrickFrench) October 13, 2016
The idea that Dylan is a greater writer (rather than song versifier) than Philip Roth is, frankly, absurd. https://t.co/jLCaBBd3Nf— Rock's Backpages (@rocksbackpages) October 13, 2016

Reporter: "Does Bob Dylan deserve the Nobel prize?" Chair of Nobel committee: "Well of course he does, he just got it." #QED— Patrick French (@PatrickFrench) October 13, 2016
I thought it was some kind of a joke that #BobDylan got the Nobel for Literature.— Ravi Mantha (@rmantha2) October 13, 2016

Bob Dylan is awesome but if giving a Nobel prize to a musician I would have gone Shane MacGowen for drinking and dental care ignorance.— Not Fancy Ray Finne (@fatassets) October 13, 2016
I really do hope that Haruki Murakami wins the Nobel for literature at some point.— Robert Occhialini (@bump) October 13, 2016
