Some Bollwood actors have managed to defy age by playing much younger characters

Different actors have different strengths and weaknesses but one factor is common to all: make up. And with every role, that factor changes. However, while preparing for a role, an actor tries to touch the required graph. The key word here is transformation — from their original self into the character they are playing. Sometimes, the challenge is go against time by playing characters who are relatively younger. At times like these, make up is just an accessory. Lowdown: Hrithik played a young man with an intellect of a child. For the lean character, he not only lost weight and changed the way he spoke but also ended up with a performance that is certainly one of his finest till date.

Ranbir Kapoor
Film: 'Jagga Jasoos' (2015)
Age while shooting: 31
Lowdown: Undoubtedly one of the most interesting young actors around, he will be essaying a 17-year-old boy in Anurag Basu’s comedy-mystery. To his credit, he has played a college student in Wake Up Sid (2009) and an oldie in Barfi! (2012).

Irrfan Khan
Film: 'Paan Singh Tomar' (2010)
Age while shooting: 42
Lowdown: Hitherto not known for physically transforming into the characters he portray on the screen, Irrfan surprised everyone by playing the eponymous role of a champion athlete who became a dacoit.

Dhanush
Film: 'Raanjhanaa' (2013)
Age while shooting: 30
Lowdown: Although Sonam Kapoor too played a teenager in the successful Anand L Rai's film, it was Dhanush's part as a lovestruck school boy that was not only remarkably charming but also convincing enough.

Monali Thakur
Film: 'Lakshmi' (2014)
Age while shooting: 28
Lowdown: The 'Sawaar Loon' singer from Lootera made her Bollywood debut in Nagesh Kukunoor's film on human trafficking and child prostitution. She portrayed a 13-year-old girl, who is repeatedly violated, in the film.

Aamir Khan
Film: 'Rang De Basanti' (2006) and 3 Idiots (2009)
Age while shooting: 41, 44
Lowdown: He earned the sobriquet of Mr Perfectionist because of his penchant to get into the character, young characters, to be precise. He played a college kid in two of the memorable movies from the last decade.

Amitabh Bachchan
Film: 'Paa' (2009)
Age while shooting: 66
Lowdown: The legendary actor challenged himself to play a 12-year-old boy who is suffering from a rare disorder called progeria. Interestingly enough, Vidya Balan played his mother in the R. Balki film.

Saif Ali Khan
Film: 'Cocktail' (2012)
Age while shooting: 41
Lowdown: Last millennium, he was written off as industry’s chocolate boy but post his act in Dil Chahta Hai (2001), his youthful looks has helped him essay characters who are well into their early 30s.

Blast from the past

32-year-old Kishore Kumar effectively pretended to be a juvenile in the 1962 film 'Half Ticket'.

Andrew Garfield was 27 while shooting for 'The Amazing Spider-Man' (2012) and Tobey Maguire was 26 while filming 'Spider-Man' (2002). Both played the 17-year-old Peter Parker.



Calista Flockhart (of 'Ally McBeal' fame) was 31 while playing the 18-year-old girl in 'The Birdcage' (1996).



Michael J. Fox was 29 during the shoot of 'Back to the Future Part III' (1990) whereas his character was a 17-year-old boy.
