Early this year, Jacqueline Fernandez expressed a desire to open a restaurant in Mumbai. Last week, her dream came true.

The Sri Lankan import held a food tasting session at the soon-to-be launched Thai food restaurant in Bandra. Jacqueline has teamed with buddies, who are restaurateurs. She already owns a restaurant back home in Colombo.

While Jackie's dream has taken shape, there are several other stars who are keen to serve multi-cuisine culinary delights in state-of-the-art theme decor.

The latest to join the bandwagon of actors-turned-restaurateurs is Esha Gupta. She says, "I will be setting it up in suburban Mumbai. It will be a joint venture with two friends from New Delhi. One of them already owns two eateries."

Gupta decided to become a restaurateur because of her love for cooking. "I find cooking therapeutic. I started experimenting in the kitchen at the age of 10."

Harbouring dreams of turning chef ever since she was a child, she says her hopes were "shattered" when she realised she had an apathy towards the smell of chicken.

"My family is vegetarian. One day, I told my father that I'd cook chicken. When he got raw chicken for me, I tried marinating it, but couldn't stand the smell. That's when I realised this wouldn't work."

The actor refuses to reveal the theme and cuisine, but says her restaurant will open its doors by the year-end. "We're curating a menu," she says.

Stars are known to diet and work out to always be in ship-shape. But it is the love for cooking that draws them to kitchens. This is what even tempts King Khan to open a restaurant.

Shah Rukh Khan says, "I know how to make pasta. The first time I made it, my daughter (Suhana) said that it turned out fine, so maybe I'd like to try my hand at it again. I genuinely want to cook. Imagine, if I open a chain of restaurants it will do a lot of business."

He adds, "Juhi Chawla once asked me, 'Why have you named your film production company, Red Chillies?' And I was like, 'Just in case filmmaking fails, I'll open a restaurant by the same name."

Keeping in mind the healthy lifestyle they lead, some want to serve the same fare to diners as well. Though hubby Farhan Azmi is in the restaurant business, Ayesha Takia wants to open a place strictly for vegans. She says, "I have been vegan for seven years and so is my mother (Faridah).

Not many people are aware of the concept and there aren't many restaurants offering vegan fare. My mother will curate the recipes. We are also planning to tell people that going vegan is healthy."

Amyra Dastur

On the other hand, Amyra Dastur wants to open a Parsi food restaurant. "My brother [Jehangir Dastur] and I always wanted to be chefs. My dream was to open a café in Goa. Once, I started earning and saving, our conversations turned into business plans. Now that my brother has graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in London we've decided to start a quaint and simple Parsi food restaurant in south Mumbai. We have a few places in mind and will soon finalise the location."

These actors are already working on their plans and are whipping up culinary delights. Which star will be the next to succumb to the food business? Let's wait and watch.
