Bookworms on a budget can rejoice as newly-opened Bargain Book Hut at Kala Ghoda will give you the advantage of range and fair pricing at the same space
Bargain Book Hut isn’t easy to locate. You will have to negotiate several bylanes in Kala Ghoda to reach this compact shop. But once you’ve walked in, it feels worth the trail as you do a quick scan to catch the massive discounts on offer. There are plenty of shops around that offer discounts on bestsellers in the fiction and non-fiction categories. But Bargain Book Hut offers hefty 45% to 70% discounts on a lot beyond the regular bestsellers. The shop reminded us of the corner bookshops we frequented as kids, where you never knew what to expect in the next shelf.

On the day we visited, we enjoyed browsing through titles including 1,000 Places To See Before You Die (Rs 399 down from Rs 1,300), a six-volume pack of Nancy Drew (Rs 399 down from Rs 899), Love Stars — A Guide To All Your Relationships (Rs 99 down from Rs 199), Wilbur Smith’s Blue Horizon (Rs 99 down from Rs 299) and Dominique Lapierre’s Five Past Midnight In Bhopal (Rs 99 down from Rs 295).
We liked that there were plenty of books for kids including titles related to fun facts while for adults, there were collector’s editions of magazines, books on business and Bollywood to pore over. Pamphlets across the store emphasise on the fact that new books are brought in on a daily basis. Weekly mailers on their latest books with the best discounts are also sent to customers.
The idea behind Bargain Book Hut is to enable people (who are often daunted by the price) to buy affordable books, explains Rahul Bammi, COO, Bargain Book Hut. “We offer a range of national and international books and thanks to tie-ups with the suppliers, are able to sell them at a discount. While popular books are available elsewhere as well what sets us apart is the kind of books we offer, and the low prices. We have had people approach us whether we were sure of the price we were selling at,” he said. Over the next few months they plan to open outlets in the suburbs. As for us, we are happy we have a nook to visit and make lots of impulse buys.
