Box office face-off! Hollywood-Bollywood releases set to clash in 2016

Half of 2016 is over and one thing in the cinematic universe is more than evident — Hollywood is no longer second choice for moviegoers in India. The latest instalments of popular franchises like 'The Avengers', 'The Fast and The Furious', 'Deadpool' and 'X Men', to name a few, have been game changers in recent months.

The unexpected success of movies from the West posed as a threat to not only small Bollywood films but also big-ticket Hindi releases. Long-awaited and hyped affairs such as Shah Rukh Khan-starrer 'Fan', Katrina Kaif's 'Fitoor' and 'Sarbjit' starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Randeep Hooda were beaten by the might of Hollywood films on home turf.

Now, in the second half of the year, battle lines have been drawn and a lot is at stake for aamchi industry. A look at Holly-Bolly releases set to go head-to-head at the box office.

Jason Bourne and Dishoom
Face-off:
The iconic spy thriller series 'Jason Bourne' is set for a big screen comeback after a nine-year hiatus. A collision with the Hindi action flick 'Dishoom' starring Varun Dhawan, John Abraham and Jacqueline Fernandez is bound to be dramatic, considering the nostalgia factor and the slow yet staggering success of the American film.

Queen Of Katwe, Magnificent Seven, Banjo and Manmarziyan
Face-off:
Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o-starrer 'Queen of Katwe' is a bio-drama based on a young girl whose life turns around as she's introduced to the game of chess. 'Magnificent Seven' is on the other end of the spectrum — an action film. They will compete with a musical 'Banjo' and a romance drama 'Manmarziyan' from the Bollywood stable, films which are expected to resonate with the mainstream audience.

Miss Peregrine
Face-off:
After 'Edward Scissorhands', 'Sweeney Todd', 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory', and 'Alice in Wonderland', Tim Burton is ready with a fantasy film. It will release alongside Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's retelling of Mirza-Saheban tragic love saga — a launchpad for Anil Kapoor's son, Harshvardhan, and Saiyami Kher 'Mirziya'.

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them and Force 2
Face-off:
When the trailer of the Hollywood film, 'Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them' was unveiled, an entire generation that grew up with Harry Potter sat up and took notice. The flick is written by JK Rowling and inspired by her eponymous book on magical creatures of the Harry Potter universe. Will the audience choose fantasy over hardcore, adrenaline-pumping action of the John Abraham and Sonakshi Sinha-starrer 'Force 2'? We'll wait and watch.

Assassin
Face-off:
Who better than Michael Fassbender to take on Aamir Khan during the Christmas weekend? The multiple Oscar nominee will play a descendant of the mysterious secret society, the Assassins. Aamir's sports drama, on the other hand, promises to give Bollywood a happy ending to 2016. Watch out for this big fight.

Industry voice
We are thrilled about the forthcoming releases, especially since each of them is based on topics that would appeal to everyone. That could a primary reason why Hollywood movies are garnering such a positive response from the audience. For example, a movie like Queen of Katwe deals with human triumph which is sure to tug at heartstrings.
