Civic body plans 25% water cut if monsoon is late, says level in four dams has dipped
Get ready with a back-up plan if the monsoon does not arrive soon, for the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is planning a 25 per cent water cut in such a case.
PMC officials say since the water in Khadakwasla and three other dams has dipped to about 6 per cent of their total capacity, the water supply in the city may get affected.
PMC and Irrigation Department said there was adequate water in the dams for now, but future cuts would depend on the timely arrival of the monsoon.
"If the monsoon gets further delayed, we will have to cut down on water supply," said P V Surve, superintendent engineer, Irrigation Department.
The city irrigation division has already stopped water supply for agricultural purposes from June 4 as part of the water cut programme. The current supply will be reviewed and then a final call will be taken on it. The Met department has already announced that the monsoon will reach the city and its surrounding areas by June 12.
According to Surve, only 1.78 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) water is left in the dams and the city requires total 1.3 TMC water per month.
The total capacity of Khadakwasala, Panshet, Warasgaon and Temghar dam is 17.92 TMC wherein Temghar dam is empty at present.
"We are aware of the present water level in Khadakwasla and the other three dams and are ready to start water cuts in and around the city," said V G Kulkarni, development engineer, Water Supply, PMC. "The city requires 1,100 million litres of water per day. We might cut 275 MLD if the need arises."
