Brasa better than Indian coaches: Negi

Yesterday, four national hockey selectors dashed out a letter to the sports ministry asking to discontinue the services of Jose Brasa as the coach of the national team. The Spaniard's contract expired yesterday.

However, former India goalkeeper Mir Ranjan Negi said the ministry should persist with Brasa, who spent 15 months with the team, until they find a top quality international coach as replacement.

"Brasa may not have had a huge impact on the team, but he definitely made some positive changes. He should be discontinued only if we get someone with higher credentials than him. At least, he is better than the Indian coaches," Negi told MiD DAY.

In a letter to SAI joint secretary Pravir Krishan, Ajitpal Singh, Balbir Singh, BP Govinda and Zafar Iqbal said that the reins of the national team be handed to Harendra Singh, who resigned as national coach in the wake of India's shock semi-final loss to Malaysia in the Asian Games.

"There was no reason for India not winning the gold at the Asian Games. Even at the FIH World Cup we fared badly. So, Brasa's achievements were nil. But as a coach, he is good. I would rate him seven on 10 for his coaching ability," added the former India women's coach.

The selectors questioned Brasa's credentials as a top-notch coach and accused him of creating groupism in the team. "We feel that the coach should have the ability to impart training both theoretically and practically.

"Mr Brasa only possesses blackboard knowledge. The coach must be in a position to demonstrate practically on the field and guide the players to correct their mistakes besides teaching them modern tactics," the selectors said in the letter.
