After SC allows some colleges that lack full-time principals to admit students, varsity may give all colleges time to fill posts

The University of Pune may give a breather of six months to some 255 colleges who have failed to appoint full-time principals thus enabling them to admit first-year students.

The Supreme Court had given a deadline of May 31 to appoint full-time principals to nearly 300 colleges failing which the colleges were barred from admitting fresh students. However, a few of these colleges later approached the apex court and asked for more time stating they did not get eligible candidates within the stipulated time.

"After the appeal, these colleges have been given six months more for making the appointments. But some 255 colleges affiliated to UoP have still been left out and we are now seeking legal opinion if we could extend the deadline for these institutes as well," said Vasudev Gade, director of Board of College and University Development (BCUD).

Another concern was that some colleges had already admitted students even without full-time principals and such students were unlikely to get eligibility certificates unless an extension was given, said a board member.
