"When I went to sleep yesterday, I knew my record was under threat. But I could sleep calmly. Records are meant to be broken and if not today, it will be broken on some other day. But I want to be alive to see my record being snatched away," 40-year old Lara said.
Solidity
"It requires solidity for any batsman to score as many runs. It was a difficult task against the Sri Lankan bowlers, but I thought Younis Khan would do it," said Lara.
Lara's record of highest aggregate runs in Test cricket was broken by Sachin Tendulkar a few weeks ago.
Pakistan batting legend Hanif Mohammad went to Karachi's National Stadium yesterday with the hope of witnessing Younis Khan break his national record of 337 runs.
The Little Master had got his triple century against West Indies in Bridgetown in 1957-58 the longest innings in Test history (970 minutes).
However, to Hanif's disappointment the Pakistan skipper could add only seven runs to his overnight score of 306 before being bowled by Dilhara Fernando.
"I wanted him to score 400 runs today," Hanif said from Karachi.
Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene utilised nine bowlers to break Younis' epic innings. Only the two Jayawardenes (skipper and wicketkeeper) didn't bowl in Pakistan's massive first innings (765 for six decl) during which they surpassed Sri Lanka's total of 644 for seven declared with ease.
