Bride-to-be kills self after ex-lover writes to in-laws

A 23-year-old woman who was about to get married in two months committed suicide on March 15 after her former boyfriend allegedly wrote a letter to her future in-laws, pointing fingers at her character.

The Borivli police yesterday arrested the man, Hardik Patel, a businessman, and are now in the process of comparing his handwriting with the one in the letter. According to the Borivli police, the woman Urmila Jadhav, hanged herself at her residence in Gorai on March 15.

Place of suicide: The woman was found hanging in her house at Sanjeevani chawl, Gorai in Borivli (W)

On the day of the incident, around 7 pm, Urmila’s father Popat and brother Ketan were on their way to Malad when her mother Shraddha found her daughter’s room locked from inside at their house in Sanjeevani Chawl at Gorai in Borivali (W).

Shraddha knocked on the door to Urmila’s room on the mezzanine floor of their house. When she did not get a response, she panicked and phoned Popat, who returned to the house and broke open the door, only to find Urmila hanging from the ceiling fan.

The police officers said that Urmila was engaged to be married to a Kandivli-based man on May 12. On March 14, Urmila’s in-laws-to-be landed up at her residence with a letter written in Gujarati.

The officers said the letter questioned Urmila’s character and stated that she had several boyfriends. It also stated that they should “think a hundred times before going forward with the wedding”.

“After reading the letter, Urmila’s fiancé’s kin told her parents that they would have to rethink about the wedding date. Urmila’s parents told us the incident had shattered her. They tried talking to her but she would not say anything to them,” said API A Sanap, from Borivli police station.

The police had registered a case of unnatural death until they found out that Urmila had been in a relationship with Hardik Patel (24) for the past one year.

The police officers said that Patel, who is a businessman, knows to write only in Gujarati. On Sunday, cops arrested Patel on the charge of abetment to suicide on the basis of suspicion of blackmailing Urmila by sending the letter tainting hercharacter.

Police have given the letter to handwriting analysts to see if it is Patel’s handwriting.u00a0
