Bihar School Examination Board is the main board of education in Bihar. The Bihar School Examination Board is established for holding and conducting an examination at the end of the Secondary School stage, for prescribing course of studies for such examination and for carrying out such other objects and duties as may be considered necessary for the purpose as stated in the Act, Rules and Regulations of the Board.
BSEB was formed to facilitate education and conduct examinations at secondary and senior secondary standard (Class 10 and Class 12) in both government and private schools in the state of Bihar on the basis of syllabus as prescribed by the Government of Bihar. Secondary and senior secondary school examinations are held twice a year by the board. Every year the Bihar School Examination Board conducts Annual Secondary School Examination in the month of February/March and Supplementary School Examination in the month of August/September on the basis of course/syllabus as prescribed by the state Government.
Apart from the aforesaid Secondary School Examination, the Board also conducts departmental examinations (not on yearly basis) such as Diploma in Physical Education, Certificate in Physical Education and Teachers Training Examination on such terms and condition as laid down by the State Government.
Bihar Baord BSEB is headquartered at Patna. The board tries hard to ensure the proper level of education in Bihar and increase the literacy rate. As per 2011 census of India, Bihar's literacy rate was 63.8 %, an increase of 16.8 % over last census (the highest among all the state) but still it ranked last among all the states of India.
