Male, 54 years, Hindu.

Cause of death: Haemorrhage and shock due to multiple firearm injuries.

Entries in the postmortem report of Hemant Kamlakar Karkare.

A copy of the postmortem report conducted on slain Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief on the morning of November 27, few hours after he was shot dead by Ajmal Amir Qasab, states how two bullets pierced Karkare's rib rage leaving a 3x2 cm entry mark. The bullets were found inside his right lungs and the lower lobe.

Entry wounds

The report has a page on the external and internal injuries sustained by Karkare and sketches of the bullet entry wounds. The internal injuries listed include, rib fractures, sternum fracture, puncture of trachea (wind pipe), heart, liver, lung punctured and lacerated, among others. His spine and spinal cord were intact.

Karkare's body was brought to the J J Hospital morgue at 6.30 am and the postmortem conducted for an hour and a half. The report indicates the body was naked, which assumes significance, as the missing bulletproof jacket was not on his person.

A Public Interest Litigation was filed in the High Court seeking investigations into corrupt practices while buying sub-standard bullet proof jackets resulting in his death. Sources said that the file allegedly went missing because the bulletproof jackets were tested in 2004 and found to be sub-standard and were returned and
Rs 24.71 lakh reimbursed to the government.

CBI inquiry

The petition also hints at the fact that the sensitive case should be investigated by an independent inquiry committee or the CBI.

The police later went on record stating that the file related to the bulletproof jackets were not traceable and hence it was not possible to give information related to the subject. However, a section of the file was recovered from the police headquarters yesterday. DCP Vijay Singh Jadhav was not available from comments despite repeated efforts.
