What better place for burglars to come together than the Yerawada jail? That is how three men caught by the Airport police yesterday for various burglaries met for the first time.

The police recovered 270 gm of gold, 200 gm of silver, laptops, one LCD TV, cameras, a car, and two bikes from the burglars.

The three men had met in Yerawada jail, 10 years ago. After that they started living together even outside the jail. If they happened to be out on bail at the same time, then they would commit burglaries together. None of them has been convicted of any theft to date.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone IV, Sanjay Jadhav said: "The three had met each other in jail about 10 years ago. Since then, they commit burglaries whenever they are released on bail. The trio said that in 10 years they were out on bail for many days, which taken together would amount to two years."

The trio is Mohammad Umar Bashir Khan (35), a resident of Sanjay Park on the New Airport road, Shamsuddin Nazir Jumbovale (28) of Sahwas society in Karve Nagar and Sarfaraj Babu Miya alias Sheru Shaikh (27) from Kagdipura, Kasba Peth. Sarfaraj was released on bail just three months ago.

"After the arrest of the three, 25 cases in which valuables were stolen have been investigated," DCP Jadhav said.

"The modus operandi of the gang was to identify locked flats during the day and then strike that place. They used the car to move around in the city. They have confessed to committing crimes in areas like Airport, Bhosari, Chatuhshrungi, Chakan, Bharati Vidyapeeth, Kondhwa, Swargate and Loni Kalbhor," Jadhav said.
