Cabbie rescues 43-yr-old from molester's grip

A 43-year-old woman close to the Thackeray family was groped by a drunkard on 14th Road in Khar (W) on Wednesday.

A taxi driver who witnessed the incident rescued the woman from the clutches of the molester, who was then handed over to cops.

According to the Khar police, the incident took place when the victim, originally from Nashik, was on her way to her Khar house from the gym. As she reached the 14th Road, a drunk man groped her back.

“His grip was so firm that the victim could not free herself on her own. While she was struggling, a taxi driver who happened to have witnessed the incident ran to rescue her,” said an officer from Khar police station, asking to remain anonymous.

Police said that the driver had to beat up the accused to make him let go of the woman. Once the victim was rescued, the taxi driver caught hold of the accused and took him to the Khar police, with the victim in tow. The incident took place in the afternoon after which a group of workers belonging to the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena gathered at the police station.

A local source said that soon after the MNS men gathered at the station, a first information report (FIR) was filed and the accused was arrested.

Senior officials from Khar police refused to comment on the issue.

The accused, identified as Bariya, has been booked under section 354 (assault or criminal force on woman) of the Indian Penal Code.

He was produced in the Bandra magistrate court on Thursday and has been remanded in police custody.u00a0
