Broken Tail: A Tiger's Last Journey, is leading tiger cameraman Colin Stafford-Johnson's personal chronicle of the 600 days spent in Rajasthan's Ranthambore National Park on the trail of a three-year-old tiger, who mysteriously disappeared from the famous reserve

Why did Broken Tail, the three-year-old male tiger, described as the "most flamboyant" cub in the Ranthambore National Park by acclaimed wildlife documentary filmmaker Colin Stafford-Johnson leave the country's so-called best-protected tiger reserves?

The answer would take cinematographer Stafford-Johnson on a 600-day journey that would teach him valuable lessons on the need for -- and the importance of -- tiger conservation.

What initially started out as an assignment to find a tiger and tell its story would soon become a more personal journey for the crew, including local guide Salim Ali, and director Stafford-Johnson, who travelled by horseback across Rajasthan looking for Broken Tail, gathering clues about his route and his possible reasons for leaving the park; reasons that would perhaps shed greater light on the future conservation of India's wild tigers.

Long way from home
Broken Tail was one of the two cubs of a Tigress named Machli, whose trail Stafford-Johnson had initially started on. Finding him to be their perfect subject - a large part due to his playfulness roguish charm - the cinematographer would follow the playful cub through his journey into adulthood into the big, bad world of poachers and inhospitable terrain.u00a0

Broken Tail: A Tiger's Last Journey is considered one of the finest documentaries made on the subject. On the film's website, the makers state their desire that the film not be classified as "a wildlife film".

Legacy of broken tail
The note on the website reads: "It is about the obsession of a man who has spent more time filming wild tigers than anyone on the planet. It is about his personal pilgrimage to a tiger that captivated him and the hope that through his journey, Broken Tail may provide some insight into the long-term survival of the tiger."
