After 22-year-old man is abducted at gunpoint in Bhiwandi by the six accused who demand Rs 10 crore, he escapes and calls cops; they think it's a hoax call and leave him to his own devices

Even as the Thane police have arrested four people for kidnapping and robbing a 22-year-old man at gunpoint, they are on the lookout for two more accomplices. The victim was first looted of cash and goods worth Rs 3.3 lakh and then asked to arrange for an additional Rs 10 crore in cash.

The complainant Mayur Rane, a resident of Waghbil in Thane, is an online trader who also provides financial aid for land deals. The arrested accused, all residents of Bhiwandi, have been identified as Hemant Gulvi (34), Satish Pahurkar (24), Vetal Patil (22) and Nitesh Patil (22).

On July 23, the accused, on the pretext of showing him a plot of land, brought Rane to Mankoli Naka in Bhiwandi at around 3:30 pm.

"In his car, they threatened him with a revolver and took away the Rs 2 lakh in cash that he had on his person along with gold ornaments and mobile phone, adding up to a total of Rs 3.33 lakh. They then demanded Rs 10 crore, threatening that they will kill his parents and family if he did not comply. He was later taken to a farmhouse where two more people, identified as Vaibhav and Sagar, assaulted him," said a police officer from Thane police.

To buy some time, Rane told them that he had Rs 9 crore in cash at his other home in Roadpalli Hill, but that the key to the place was kept at his Waghbil residence. At 9:30 pm, one of the men accompanied him there, but he managed to give him the slip and lock himself in the house.

He called the police control room for help, the police thought that it was a hoax call and didn't come to his aid. A scared Rane stayed locked inside till the next day. Meanwhile, the accused waiting outside, got scared that Rane might have called the police and ran away from the spot," said an officer from the Thane police.

The next day, an infuriated Rane wrote a written complaint to the Thane Commissioner of Police, Parambir Singh, who taking a serious cognizance of the issue and on July 27 registered a case at the Narpoli police station. The investigation was handed over to the Wagle estate crime branch unit.

Kishore Pasilkar, senior police inspector, Wagle estate crime branch said, "We have arrested four people and are in search of two more who are absconding. The four arrested on Thursday from Bhiwandi already have a criminal background."

The case has been registered under sections 394 (Voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery), 364 (Kidnapping in order to murder), 365 (Kidnapping with intent secretly and wrongfully to confine person), 387 (Putting person in fear of death or of grievous hurt) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
