Is Mother Nature furious with us? Although this seems like a simple question, it's not just as simple as it sounds
Is Mother Nature furious with us? Although this seems like a simple question, it's not just as simple as it sounds.
Over the last few centuries, man, as we have all witnessed, has pushed all the wrong buttons, has broken boundaries, bulldozed forests and vegetations, blown up mountains, and dug deep into the Earth's heart in search of resources. And in the process, man has made Mother Earth very, very angry.
It has come to a point where we humans now have to bear the brunt of the centuries of wrongs done by our forefathers and ancestors. It all began with cyclic climate changes - chillier winters, wetter monsoons, hotter summers ufffd and went on to tsunamis, cyclones, frequent quakes, and incessant flooding across the world.
Visuals of cars being swept away like matchsticks from one part or the other of the world, has become a regular on news bulletins. No longer do such floods shock us. Oh, it happens so much more now. No longer are we surprised to see multi-stored buildings shake from their foundations and come crashing into a pile of dust. In fact, tsunami alerts are now sent to frequent fliers through SMS ufffd just in case, say the airlines.
Incidentally, a friend browsed the front page of a national daily and asked me if it was possible to have a devastating earthquake in Mumbai. Initially, I didn't know what to say, but my first thought was that on technical grounds, it was not possible. However, having said that I got thinking, is it really a possibility? Are we really prepared to handle a situation like that? Before answering that consider this ufffd the last time Mumbai faced a major natural calamity ufffd the July 2005 floods ufffd we were marooned. Not a drop to drink, not a morsel to eat, no information, no immediate rescue forces, absolutely nothing.

Locals doubled up as rescuers and came up with whatever they could to help out. Soon after, the civic bodies came up with a disaster management plan to counter such a calamity. But that plan was formed only to counter floods, but is ill equipped to counter quakes and its aftermath.
So, coming back to the question, is it possible for Mumbai to firstly, encounter such a devastating quake, and secondly, can we handle it. The answer to the first is really inconclusive, knowing the cyclic weather pattern that we have been experiencing in the past few years. So a quake could just jolt us out of our slumber.
Secondly, are we equipped to handle such an emergency? Well, man can never be ready enough to tackle Mother Nature's fury.
