Groove to the tunes of Trinidad-born Soul and Pop singer Naila Joseph who will be performing in Mumbai today
Born in Trinidad, moved to France and currently residing in Bahrain, singer Naila Joseph’s musical influences are diverse.
“The music from my birthplace, such as Calypso is very carnival-like; you feel like dancing. That forms a bit of my music. My dad (an Indian), would listen to a lot of 1980s Rock, which forms one of my influences too,” she explains.

The bassist in her group is from Reunion Island who brings in his own sounds and she tells us that the rest of the musicians merge to create a unique sound. This former local church singer has come a long way with her personal album ever since she began recording at the tender age of three. She has also worked with different international artistes such as 3 Canal, Machel Montano and Rupee.
Currently in India, she has performed at music festivals in Bengaluru and Puducherry. “This is my first trip here; it feels like homecoming to me. I got a chance to listen to the local music at the festivals and I love the rhythms. You feel like dancing. I am also working out a collaboration with an Indian artiste,” she informs us.
She is currently wrapping up another album, which will have a lot of Soul influences. As for today’s performance in the city, she promises an energetic vibe that will showcase her original music packed in with a lot of Caribbean and Soul influences.
