The Anti-Extortion Cell of the city police has arrested two persons for duping a retired professor of nearly Rs 1.01 crore by posing as CBI officials and promising government land at a cheap rate. Rekha Acharam Godse and Vijay Siddeshwar Tandle, both 45 years old, were arrested from their respective residences in Kothrud yesterday. The police found Rs 7 lakh in cash in their possession.
The action came after Dr V J Yadav (72), who had been dealing with the accused since last year and had paid the amount in instalments by selling off his wife's jewellery, filed a cheating complaint with the police. The third accused Ashok D'Souza is still at large. The court remanded the two arrested persons inu00a0 police custody till February 13.
Godse worked as a maid servant at one Professor Marathe's residence, who is also Yadav's former colleague and under whom his son Pravin (42) is doing his PhD. Yadav used to teach at the Abasaheb Garware College at Karve Nagar. Godse contacted Yadav through his son Pravin and put him in touch with D'Souza who introduced himself as a CBI official. D'Souza convinced Yadav of various government properties which could be bought at dirt cheap price and that he being a CBI official could facilitate such deals.
According to Police Inspector Sachin Sawant, the accused managed to take payment from the professor without even showing him the plots. He was asked to make cash payments to Tandle, who introduced himself as Hemant Darwatkar to the victim.
All the cash instalments were given to Tandle, who collected the amount in phases from Yadav's house near Mhatre Bridge. "They kept delaying handing over the promised land citing bureaucratic hurdles in Mantralaya and an unsuspecting Yadav kept believing their arguments blindly," said Sawant.
In order to earn Yadav's trust, the accused had also given him a post-dated cheque of Rs 2 crore as a security deposit just in case the delivery failed. But the deal never came through and by the time Yadav realised that he had landed the trap of thugs, he was duped him of his life's savings.
