2 held within 24 hrs of stealing jewellery and cash at gunpoint
The Swargate police caught two people, including a former sarpanch, who had on Friday afternoon robbed a moneylender at gunpoint in his shop in Shivajinagar.
The police arrested the suspects within 24 hours of the commission of the offence. Gold and silver jewellery and cash were recovered by the police. The police said the recovery was worth Rs 8 lakh.
The police also seized a country-made revolver from the suspects. The suspects had looted the moneylender, identified as Paras Khinvasara, in Shivajinagar Gavthan.
The police accessed the CCTV footage from Khinvasara's shop and got clues that led them to the culprits.
The suspects were identified as Sarjerao Baburao Tanksale (50), a resident of Loni Kalbhor, and Devya alias Devidas Baban Gaikwad (40), a resident of Kasba Peth.
"When the footage was shown to our detection branch, they identified Tanksale, who was arrested previously in a Dehuroad murder case murder case and also a theft case in Mangalwar Peth," Police Inspector Ram Pathare said.
The officer added that Tanksale was a former Sarpanch of Koinde village in Khed taluka. They said Tanksale confessed to the crime and told police about the involvement of Gaikwad in the case. The police said both had planned the theft and done a reconnaissance of the shop before. The accused were remanded in police custody till November 28 by a city court.
