Marriages in Pune may not be the same after the city cops have banned horses, elephants and camels within city limits. However, the move has clearly made actor Celina Jaitley happy.

While Jaitely, a vegetarian and brand ambassador for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PeTA), an animal rights group, sent flowers to the Pune police to express her gratitude, Pune's tongawalas staged demonstrations in protest.

Celina said, "I am happy for the animals as they are treated shabbily. They aren't even fed adequately and are often forced to work despite being wounded." She added, "Somebody has to stand up for animals, who cannot speak for themselves. When you are using an animal you should treat them well. But, in most of the cases, the owners are so poor that they are unable to take proper care."

Anuradha Sawhney, chief functionary, PeTA India, pointed out to MiD DAY, "This is an important step, which will make a big difference to the lives of animals."

She added, "Camels, are, first of all, not suited to Pune's climate, and they often die in the monsoons, when they come down with skin disease and saddle sores."

Commissioner of Police Satyapal Singh said, "A few months back, a six-year-old girl lost her life in Kharag after a horse kicked her to death. Animals also pose a traffic problem. Citizens are extremely happy with our move.

We have been getting many congratulatory calls and e-mails."
