Chain snatchers in the city seem to be hunting bigger game now, with their latest victim being a policeman’s wife who was traveling pillion behind her husband on the Western Express Highway (WEH) yesterday afternoon.
The off-duty policeman and his wife were on their way to a wedding in Bandra, when two bike-borne snatchers, grabbed the chain from his wife’s neck. A case has been registered at Vile Parle police station.
The policeman, Pramod Khavnekar is stationed with Airport traffic police, and was earlier posted at Borivli police station. A resident of Bhandup, he was on his way to a wedding with his wife Priyanka. Even the fact that the bike had the Mumbai Police logo on the front and back was not enough to deter the crooks.
According to officials from Vile Parle police station, at around 1 pm, the couple was near Milan Subway on WEH when two snatchers approached them and made away with the chain.
After speeding along for a few metres, the pillion rider turned around, waved the chain in the air and laughed at the couple. Pramod immediately informed the police and even tried chasing the snatchers down, but they managed to escape.
Pramod and his wife then went to Vile Parle police station to lodge a complaint, where a case was registered. The gold chain was valued at more then Rs 1 lakh. A police officer said, “The biker was speeding, which endangered the lives of others. In this case, the bikers are from Bandra area and regularly race on the WEH. We have increased patrolling and bandobast in the area. We are even making people aware about such incidents but they are now becomingz unstoppable, as such crimes are easy and quick money for them.”
