Chargesheet to be issued in Jaimala temple case

Four years after Kannada actress Jaimala triggered a controversy by saying that she had allegedly touched the idol of Lord Ayyappa at Sabrimala, police in Kerala have informed the court that they are going to file a chargesheet against her by November 15.

The actress, however, says she has received no intimation of a chargesheet either from the police or the court.

Jaimala had faxed a letter to the temple authorities claiming that she had entered the temple's sanctum sanctorum and touched the idol in the wake of astrologer Unnikrishnan's allegations that the rituals and poojas at the shrine were not being performed with due sanctity.

He had said that there were even signs of the idol having been touched by a woman despite a ban on females from the ages of 10-50 even entering the temple. "I don't know what the charges leveled against me are," Jaimala told MiD DAY, adding that she would consult her legal advisors and then react.

Asked whether she would stick to her claim, Jaimala said she had clarified matters with the temple trust and had given them proof of what had transpired in the temple. "I will explain in detail, if needed, after I know what I have been charged for," she added.

Charges
The Kerala police will file a chargesheet against Jaimala, astrologer Unnikirshnan and his aide Raghupathi in the First Class Judicial Magistrate Court in Ranni in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala Highly-placed police sources say the trio will be charged under Section 295 A of the Indian Penal Code, for a deliberate and malicious act intended to outrage religious feeling. Jaimala will be the third accused in the case while the astrologer and his Bangalore-based aide will be the first and second accused.

Background
With a storm raging for months after the incident, the government ordered a crime branch probe. The inquiry reached the conclusion that the actor's claim of having been pushed into the sanctum sanctorum by the onrush of devotees appeared implausible.

The probe also says that the whole episode could be the result of a conspiracy to buttress the claim of the astrologer about the poor state of temple affairs, in which the other two also got involved.
